Natural Sleeping Aids: What’s Best For You?

The clock ticks over, it’s 2.30am.

You’ve been staring at the ceiling for the past hour, going over everything in your head, over and over again. Bills, kids, and everything you didn’t manage to do that day.

So you reach for the sleeping pills.

Sleeping medication can have a real stigma attached to it. Often the root cause of insomnia is not going to be remedied by a sleeping pill, and the real solution is not as simple as taking a pill.

In general, sleeping pills and similar medications should only be used sparingly and for the short term such as for travelling, or when recovering from a medical procedure. Sometimes they can be prescribed during for the initial treatment of insomnia. Working with your doctor on this is essential to ensure you get the maximum benefit and can safely monitor potential side effects.

There are plenty of natural sleeping aids to help you get a better night’s sleep, which should always be explored before turning to over the counter medication.

1.      Acupuncture

Acupuncture is one of the oldest healing practices in the world. The acupuncture needles, when inserted in the skin, open up these blocked channels and allow your brain to better understand that it’s time to go to sleep. It also signals the release of neuro-endocrine chemicals (like tryptophan/melatonin) to help you fall asleep and stay asleep.

2.      Establish Routine

It’s a known fact that humans are creatures of habit, and we tend to function better when we are doing something that is ritualistic. The same thing applies for sleep, try to establish a calming ritual that you do every night before crawling in bed, and you will probably find it easier to transition from being awake to being sleep.

3.      Get more Melatonin

This is a chemical which is essential for sleep but needs to come from externa sources – our bodies cannot create it. Cherries and bananas are both a great and delicious source.

4.      Exercise

Exercise will help fatigue your body so by the time you crawl into bed each night you fall fast asleep before giving it a second thought.

5.      Chamomile Tea

Try incorporating a cup of warm chamomile tea into your nightly ritual. For centuries it has been used to help relax muscles and help people doze off.

6.      Clinicians Sleep Science

Clinicians Sleep Science is a powerful and unique new formulation which contains Asparagus Shoot Extract – widely known to alleviate stress and worry. It also contains Zizyphus and the additional relaxing qualities of a highly bio-available form of Magnesium. This unique formulation not only helps support natural healthy sleep, but also promotes a calming effect.
